I've made rice in this oven....beans, chicken, cookies...all sorts of things. And they all come out fantastically (and it has nothing to do with the chef whatsoever). Seriously, sun ovens are great. They really keep in the moisture while slowly cooking everything to perfection. I highly recommend it.
The only thing is...on one model of this oven, the little metal tab that turns to lock the cover isn't painted with the heat resistent stuff so it gets VERY hot. Just know that you should probably use a pot holder or something until you know how hot yours gets.
Why don't we all use solar ovens all the time? Yes, like almost any responsible thing we do, you have to be a little bit more conscious of the world around you to use a solar oven effectively. So I'm working in the yard, and every couple of hours I come and check on the beans that are baking in the sun oven, and turn the oven so that is following the motion of the sun. The oven never got super hot on this cloudy cool day in Maine, it was more of a 200-300 degree baker, perfect for beans today, so don't plan for a pizza unless it is a sunny midsummer day, but this works. It works great. It is sturdy, bigger than it looks in the picture, but not very heavy. We are going to keep it on a rolling table near the door, so it is easy to roll outside and turn to follow the sun. My favorite thing about solar power is that it keeps us attune to the world. Our menus will suit the weather. And no burning, no worry, and NO electricity!
