I think Lola is right- if you have not had soy milk before, don't expect it to taste just like cow's milk. Think of it as a separate beverage, kinda like apple juice vs. orange juice. But if you don't want dairy milk, Silk is a great choice!
We usually buy chocolate, vanilla, or very vanilla, but have tried the plain and the mocha...
The chocolate soy milk is wonderful tasting, but we recently conducted a personal blind taste test, and found Archer Farms chocolate to be indistinguishable in flavor from the Silk, but cheaper and a bit healthier.
We generally use vanilla on our cereal, because we won't drink plain and can't get through the whole carton using it just for cereal. If you are eating cereal that's a little sweet anyway, it works great- but it will taste kinda funny on grapenuts and other plainer cereals.
The very vanilla tastes like a vanilla milkshake- a bit too sweet for me, but Kiwi loves it. The mocha tastes a lot like the Starbucks bottled frappuccinos, but I am sure is much healthier.
It is more expensive than regular milk, but I am guessing it's about the same price as organic dairy milk. Silk is organic, so it's actually comparatively priced. Silk also uses whole soy beans (unless you get their light versions), which offers more health benefits. Silk does have versions with added nutrients- we've bought the Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA Vanilla a couple times, and have been happy with that too.
So, we'll be switching to Archer Farms chocolate, but will continue buying Mocha and Omega 3-DHA Vanilla Silk.
I have to confess: I never liked cow's milk. When I was little my parents had to make me drink it. I can't even digest it very well either. I tried various soy milk brands from the asian grocery store but they all tasted and smelled awful... Now, Silk is something totally different! It tastes great - in my opinion better than milk - and it is a really refreshing drink when cold. I now use it for everything I used milk for, sauces etc and I haven't had to buy milk in years. People can't even tell that I used Silk in recipes and have actually commented that dishes are lighter than usual. When I drink it regularly, I find that my periods are less painful (it must be the effect of soy).
We buy this product from time to time - mmmmmmm, really good! It's hard for us to keep it in the fridge as the kids kinda love it and sneek glasses to the point we run out too quick. Good stuff!!!
I definitely like milk but sometimes it's good to diversify. Silk is a nice change from cow's milk (because no...they are not similar). Silk is quite rich and tasty (although I have to say, I prefer the original flavor to all the other flavors...the other ones are too sweet for me). I typically drink it plain (and not on cereal, etc)...oh and also be warned. If you haven't tried soymilk before, mixing it in your coffee might be a little weird the first time.
You also want to be sure to shake up your container though because you might get to the bottom and it'll be a little thick.
The other nice thing about Silk is that they've got their Green Caps program which is a nice way to get your soymilk and support renewable energy.
Love soymilk with my cereal. Have tried everything (from Westbrae to Trader Joes brand), and Silk is by far my favorite. It has a wonderfully creamy texture...slightly sweet. Word of warning to those who haven't tried it before: it certainly doesn't mock the taste of regular milk. But I actually prefer it (I grew up drinking nonfat/lowfat milk).
I usually use the plain flavor. I might imagine that the Vanilla flavor would overpower cereals, but it might be nice on its own.
Also, it's a tad more expensive than regular milk...but worth it, I think.
I LOVE soymilk. I'm not lactose intolerant, but I'm not a big fan of milk to begin with. The vanilla silk soymilk is such a treat! Especially if I steam it up in my espresso machine? It's like hot chocolate, only with no milk and no chocolate. I use it as "comfort food" when I've got a head cold.
My family loves Silk Milk. We have used several flavors but the favorite is Vanilla and Chocolate. I think the biggest fan is my 9 y/o daughter. She begs for me to keep this in the house. We use it as a drink and not for cereal.
I like that it is easy to find in our local strore and also the Sams stores. Living in the country this is a important factor.
To me it kinda tastes like milk that is just a bit sweet. Almost like the milk after its had cereal in it.
This is my daughters favorite soy milk. She won't drink the ones in the non-refrigerated boxes at all. I really like the Silk products as well as their company. I like to use their vanilla flavor creamer. I like that they use renewable energy. It's a bit pricey, but that's the worst thing I can say about Silk.
As others have said, it's a great alternative to milk.
The chocolate and vanilla flavours remind me of drinking a milkshake.
The sweetness also means that it makes a great healthy alternative to cream.
