Better than Standard Detergents
Draes reviewed April 3, 2008 at 12:43 pm

I used this detergent for many months. It works very well in soft water, but not as well in hard water. The value is not great, in that the 52 oz bottle only gets you about 16 loads, and that costs almost $10 - or certainly more if you have to go out of town or have it shipped in to get it (I paid $15 for my first bottle since they didn't carry it at my local health food store and it had to be shipped). I certainly prefer it to nasty-smelling, chemical- and petroleum-laden commercial laundry detergents, even for the price, but I have found a far better product and will not willingly buy this one again.

Not Good
greengirl68 reviewed September 25, 2008 at 7:10 am

This is not an eco-product.  The ingredients are not safe or non-toxic especially compared to other products available.  Plus I use twice as much of this as the other laundry detergent that I use.  I bought this once and won't buy it again.  Go and find Ecover.  It's a much better product.

Great Product
herodrx1 reviewed October 23, 2008 at 5:05 pm

We bought this at Target.  Its working really great.  I like the lack of scent and it cleans really terrific.  I like that its easy to find at a Mass Market store like Target.  When you live out in the country that is a big selling point.

I do wish that it were more concentrated so the bottle could be smaller.  It is a fairly "normal" size bottle.  Other than that it is a great product.

Great Laundry Detergent

Overall, I am impressed with this product. Some detergents I have used in the past have had a scent that was a bit overwhelming. This product works really well and it is great for the environment.

Seventh Gen Laundry
dahlbys reviewed May 25, 2008 at 10:58 am

My husband has allergies so we use free and clear detergent, and Tide HE laundry detergent started making my skin itch. When we started using Seventh Generation's laundry soap, my skin stopped itching and it is truly fragrance free instead of just being covered up.

Seventh Generation is marketing hype at its finest. Every product I have checked so far doesn't even come close to safe, natural and they are all a LONG WAY from the green products that their image portrays so well. I have to wonder if there is even a conscience anywhere in this company. It's really hard to understand how they can have pulled the wool over the eyes of SO many for SO long.

Has anyone ever bothered to read and study the ingredients in Seventh Generation products?

If not, this list is for their "Delicate Care" product (You would guess it would be more benign than others): Aqua (water), pareth-7, coceth-7 and sodium laureth sulfate (plant-derived cleaning agents), sodium hydroxide (alkalinity builder), sodium borate (alkalinity builder and soil dispersant), sorbitol and sodium gluconate (anti-redeposition agent to wash away soils), sodium citrate (water softener), calcium chloride (cleaning enhancer), hexahydro-1,3,5-Tris (2-hydroxyethyl)-s-triazine (preservative, less than 0.05%) The entire Seventh Generation line is a collection of chemical soups. I did my homework and was shocked! They cleverly attempt to disguise the triazine which has a 9 rating (10 being the worst possible health hazard). Let's see...it's linked to cancer; allergies; immune system toxicity; skin, eye and lung irritation; organ system toxicity; ecotoxicology...need I go on? All their formulas are relatively similar. Amazing that SLS is the fourth ingredient in "Delicate Care". Well at least that only rates as a 4 (moderate hazard). Too bad there's an awful lot in it (being the fourth ingredient). Oh, thanks for letting us know it is plant derived (as many poisons are). Sorry, but this would be better labeled as a biohazard. This particular product is even WORSE. SLS is the SECOND listed ingredient.

I can't understand how the people running these companies can look at themselves in the mirror. Cute kids, green leaves, blue skies blanket their products and site. They state: "In our every deliberation we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." Okay, now I at least know where the name came from. I guess seven generations ought to be long enough to make us all sick or kill us.

Geesh... A good reference to check out ingredients is Skin Deep's Safety in Cosmetics Database. You'll easily find it if you want to.

Want some quality products? Try NaturOli's Soap Nuts or Ecos' Detergents. No comparison. Both are honest companies that really care. You'll find truly effective, eco-friendly and healthy products. There are others, too. You simply have to stop believing everything on the labels and do some homework. (I know... why does it have to be this way? I hate it.) Oh, If you come across products that only tell you what they DON'T contain, or that their formulas are secret - watch out, big time. For me I've found many such products to be really scary ones - once I was finally able to get the facts on them.

I sincerely hope that I have at least touched a few readers. All my best to you and good luck! :-)

This detergent is excellent; since I used it first time I liked it and decided that will never change it. The clothes come out soft and clean. I use also their Baby detergent although I found that the ingredients are no different than the ones found on the other Seventh Generation detergents. I like the free and clear version.

I think it does a good job
lornie reviewed April 4, 2008 at 12:50 pm

This natural laundry detergent so far seems to do the job. I have used it on moderately soiled clothes, a true test would be kids clothes. It takes very little to do a full load and I found it cleaned well and had a fresh scent. It is hypo-allergenic which is a good thing when using on linens etc. especially for guests when you don't know their sensitivities. It is pricey but the 50oz bottle is to do 32 average loads. I noticed Costco is carrying more green products so I will be on the look out to see if they carry it in a more economical size. They claim it is safe for septic systems and greywater systems as well.

pretty good soap
auburnflower78 reviewed March 25, 2008 at 10:27 am

This soap is all right. I used it before switching to biokleen. Effective in cleaning but not so good in getting out stains. And the price is a bit high. It's not a bad soap if you don't deal with major stains and you can afford to buy it every week to 2 weeks. Overall it's an okay soap.

Hypo-Allergenic; Hard Time With Hard Water
histrionics reviewed June 25, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I admit: it's always tougher to get clothes clean when you have hard water. But Seventh Generation's Liquid Detergent doesn't just have a hard time with hard water--it utterly gives up the fight and goes home.

No problem: baking soda to the rescue! Add a 1/2 cup of baking soda to a load with the SG detergent, and the problem is solved. You get a fresh-smelling load of clean laundry (although for medium/tough stains, obviously you'll still want to pre-treat).

With the baking soda fix, I can highly recommend this product. It's hypo-allergenic (we use the nonscented option); not tested on animals; and consistent with a vegetable-based lifestyle.
