We got our Shorty to cary two adults and substantial cargo. It does both things admirably.
This is a low speed vehicle, which means you need to wrap your mind around the reality of taking your time to get somewhere. It has a long range per charge, even here in the mountains of eastern Tennessee. That means you can make several trips of 10 to 14 miles each in a period of a few days before you need to recharge. Our longest routine trip is the 38 mile round trip to our area farmers' market. This takes almost exactly half of the battery capacity on a full charge. We anticipate making a 50+ mile round trip to the county seat of our county, but haven't had the need to go there yet.
The lack of hard doors can make Winter driving brisk. We pad the snap-on canvas doors around the edges to keep the breeze out, and the passenger compartment is a heat-trap in the sunshine. We rarely need to use the electric heater.
Mechanical skill is needed for the required routine maintenance checks on the front-end alignment and occasionally required adjustment. No arcane tools are needed to make the needed adjustments though. We have flooded cell batteries which require routine (once a month generally) topping up with distilled water.
We have customized our Shorty, changing things to suit ourselves. With the exception of the zippered windows in the canvas doors we did all the work ourselves with no difficulty. We have a great time speaking with folks while we are out driving, especially as fuel prices skyrocket; we spend approximately $0.01 per mile for electricity.
