VW to sell a 200 MPG car in 2010

Well, 2010 continues to look like the year to buy a car.  Here's yet another reason from our friends over at EcoGeek (head on over there for the whole post):

VW has been talking for a long time about their 1L concept, so called because it uses a measly 1 liter of gasoline to go 100 km. For us Americans, that translates to about 230 miles per gallon. Of course, the amazing mileage comes at a price. The car is tiny, more of a tobaggon than a car. The single passenger actually sits behind the driver, like in a small airplane.

The tiny engine will only get the car up to about 75 mph and, as such, VW doesn't expect to sell a lot of them. Safety concerns might also keep the car from being a best seller. But, since it does have four wheels, it will have to meet all of the normal safety regulations for cars.

Hehe that's pretty cool - basically like driving around in a big toboggan.  Hey if you only need 2 seats and not much storage space, that's pretty sweet.  And 75 mph is plenty fast - I rarely go above 65 or 70 mph.

I'd still prefer to have a plug-in or electric car with that kind of efficiency and more room, but I would guess that the VW will be pretty cheap since it's small and not very high-tech.

Do you really think people will start adopting these weirder (i.e. less traditional, more unique, a little more sci fi) looking cars?  Like this VW, the Aptera, the NmG, etc?

Some people will.  I don't really care what my car looks like, as long as it performs well.  A lot of people won't buy "weird looking" cars like the Aptera though.  That's why I think the Miles and Zenn long range EVs will be the most popular.

You want hot chicks to pay attention? Get an Aptera. You want to look boring and inconspicuous? Buy a Zenn or a Miles. There will be an EV for every demographic.

Funny comment about 'chicks' - but I agree... LOL!!!  I think the aptera is very cool, and it would be an eye catcher.  Imagine the ZZ Top video "Legs", but replace the hot rod with an Aptera... Ok, maybe that is a little off, but not out of the ballpark.  :-)

It's actually right in the ballpark. Green is the new red (or black if you prefer)

:D
