Have any of you seen the commercials for Subaru's Indiana manufacturing plant? They claim that they have a zero-waste policy, and that they are located on a protected wildlife refuge.
My wife screamed 'greenwashing' at the TV when she saw that (and I'll admit I was pretty suspicious too) , but I found this post on EcoGeek from a year ago.Good job, Subaru!
That's cool, and a start. Now they just need to start making some environmentally friendly cars!
I think Subaru deserves a bit more credit than that. I know this may seem like a bit of 'greenwashing', but they're doing far better than most companies:
Subarus are less fuel-efficient, simply because they only build all-wheel drive vehicles. They end up being quite a bit heavier as a result, but the safety benefits and functionality in rain/snow/ice is important to many owners.
Also, since Toyota now owns 8.7 percent of Subaru, they're working together on future hybrid vehicles. I'm sure there are big improvements to come.
