Carrotmob Inaugural Event - March 29th in San Francisco

Carrotmob is an innovative new initiative for corporate social responsibility just starting up in San Francisco. The premise with Carrotmob is that in order to incite change in corporate America, we need to use more Carrot (profit$, great PR, etc.) and less stick (legislation, bad PR, etc.)

Carrotmob's goal is to bring together massive numbers of socially minded consumers to patronize the highest "bidding" corporation. In this case, the "bidding" from the corporations is their commitment to change blatantly unsustainable practices, remove harsh chemicals from their production, or other such efforts. In exchange, the entire mob of Carrotmobbers will patronize that company over its competitors, and help to generate positive PR online and in other media.

Now, while this grand vision is inspiring, the Mob is starting with a very necessary baby step - changing the practices of one Bay Area business. The first Mob event is on March 29th at K & D Market, on 16th St between Valencia and Guerrero in San Francisco. This store has committed to taking 22% of gross receipts that day and using them to invest in upgrades to make their store more environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient. I think this is a great start.

Check out more detail on the Carrotmob Website - and save the date, March 29th if you live in the Bay Area!

It went really well.  Tons of people turned out and there was a crazy line outside the store for quite a while!

Here's something from the Carrotmob website:

On a typical weekday David told me that their store might bring in $1800 or $2000, more like $3000 on a weekend. He predicted that they might hit $5000 with the help of Carrotmob. The amount of money we spent, including the $1000 from Yahoo, was over $10,000!...The Carrotmob donation box raised over $700! About $710, but I didn't count all the small change....plus another $50 on Paypal!

So a good chunk of that will go to green up the store.  And there were two barrels of canned foods donated by shoppers to the SF Food Bank.  I'm sure Brent will post more details as all the numbers get worked out.

Awesome, looks like it was really successful.  Glad it went well!

I snagged a few shots of the event in action - I'm really proud of how well Brent pulled it off...it was a massive undertaking for sure, but he did it in style:

Here's the MOB:

and the guidance for folks at the event:

Great times and I think a perfect event to getting some momentum for the concept.
